[01/26/2017] - Moon Patrol! |
Moon Patrol is an excellent MSX game, an arcade adaptation well made: nice music, great graphics for an MSX1 game… but the keyboard controls were awful.
But not anymore! I change the keyboard routine (which now is 13 bytes shorter!) and now you can use the space bar to shoot (both up and forwards) and the up arrow key to jump!
Get the game in the “Our games” section!

[10/08/2016] - Captain Zilog |
Did you know that Zilog (the manufactor behind MSX’s Z80 CPU) has a mascot? A super-hero?

Captain Zilog! And he has 3 (recent) comics online – available to read, download and even order!

[10/04/2016] - Hype FM |
Some time ago, someone had the idea to make a FM version of the game “Hype”.
Years went by, and nothing…
Recently something called NandemoFM was released, a tool to redirect the PSG sound through FM – but it only works on games that uses the MSX BIOS.
Hype access PSG through ports, so NandemoFM didn’t work on it… at least until now!
I took the game and converted it’s calls from direct writing on PSG to use the BIOS! This way, NandemoFM works, and the game now runs with FM sound!
The bad side, is that Z80 can’t handle Hype + NandemoFM without some sound distortions – so it was necessary to use R800 and DRAM to achieve the correct results.
The game ROM is available at the “our games” page – and don’t forget to set the ROM to load as ASCII8 mapper, otherwise it won’t work!
See the game running on FM:

[07/10/2014] - Penguin Memories |
Did you know there is a cartoon, made by Konami and Sony, where Pentarou, the penguin from Antartic Adventure and Penguin Adventure, is the star?
There is one!
It is a little strange (it starts in the middle of a war, penguins shooting machine guns…), it’s all in Japanese (is there a subtitled version anywhere?) – but it is at least fun to watch!
Edit: subtitled version found! ๐

[07/07/2014] - 15 years online! |
MSX Files is celebrating 15 years online!
And nothing better to do it, than releasing a game, so here it is!
Have you ever seen this screenshot below?

Not if you’re playing “The Munsters” converted from Spectrum on MSX! The game had some corrupted data (or the game somehow corrupts itself) – but I was able to edit the game, in a way so the missing screens gets really similar to the ones in the original, and now the game is fully playable!
Inside the DSK available there are 2 versions of the game, both patched: one that runs on MSX1 and another that runs on MSX2 and above without problems – but don’t worry too much about it, the BASIC loader detects your MSX version and loads the correct file accordingly!

[06/23/2013] - Escape from Alcatraz |
Here in Brazil there was a MSX game called “Alcatraz a fuga impossรยญvel” (Alcatraz the impossible escape). A fun adventure game that was both sold, and had its listing published on MSX books at the time.
Inspired by the game, Icon Games developed “Escape from Alcatraz” a game with the same premise: you’re a prisoner on Alcatraz and must escape!

There is also an article on gamedev.net explaining a little bit of the development process.
The game is both on portuguese and english, available on iOS and Android and the best part: it’s totally free!

[01/06/2013] - Disk Interfaces – brand new! |
Paulo Maluf, a well known member of the brazilian MSX community made 10 disk interface carts – compatible with both 3.5″ and 5.25″ disks, which can be used on any MSX!

The interfaces are being sold for por R$69 + shipping (more or less US$34.50), and can be aquired here!
If you’re interested, you’d better hurry – only 10 cartridges were manufactured!

[01/02/2013] - The Munsters MSX – Finally fixed! |
Anyone who tried to play “The Munsters” on MSX, probably faced this bug: when the first level ends, the game freezes.
The problem was the first room on the second stage – which is completely corrupted even in the original tape version!
The first attempt to fix this problem was to look into the existing Spectrum versions, hoping to find the room data. It was in vain, since the room format used on MSX is totally different from the Spectrum version!
But wasn’t this a conversion…? Apparently the game was heavily modified: on MSX there are less graphics, in the 2nd stage two rooms are repeated (removing 2 rooms from the original in the Spectrum – and exactly one of those was the one corrupted!) – the dragon on 3rd level is green (on Spectrum it’s the same color as the car) and the game in general has less graphics than the Spectrum version – all to make the game and it’s music fit into MSX’s 64k of RAM.
The solution then was to make from scratch a new room for level 2, “similar” to the original on Spectrum (not identical, since the MSX version doesn’t have all the graphics!). With that’s done, the game is running normally, as you can see below:
There are still small things to fix, but once that’s done, the game will be available here on the site!
